This ten-day cycling expedition begins in the Cuban capital of Havana and ends by the Caribbean Sea in Trinidad some 350kms later. Most of the cars on the road are large American Chevys and Buicks from before the revolution, and buildings have remained untouched for more than half a century. You can't help but be touched by the friendliness and pride that the Cubans feel for their country. Outside of Havana, there are very few vehicles on the road and as Cuba has a strong biking culture, you will fit right in. You will pass villages separated by colourful fruit orchards, sugar plantations and tree-lined avenues. You will also see the monument to Che Guevera as you pass through Santa Clara. You will cycle through Cienfuegos, which sits in a bay facing the Caribbean Sea and has attracted pirates through the ages, and continue to the magnificent Sierra del Escambray before finally reaching Trinidad. You can spend your final evening dining and salsa dancing before returning to Havana. For more information Call: 0800 121 62 55 Email: greatchallenges@asthma.org.uk

Brooklands proved to be a futuristic venue for the first Brooklands 10km in 2008. The event was a bit too twisty and turny so we have redesigned it to take out a lot of the sharp bends but retained the character of the event with it's start on the historic Brabham Straight on the listed old Brooklands race circuit which then links into the super-modern circuit in front of the high tech Mercedes World building.
Mercedes have allowed us to come off the circuit onto perimeter roads this year so we don't have to squeeze 10km onto the closed circuit, but it will remain very flat and, with the exception of the short section of the old Brooklands circuit, on very smooth road surfaces

Our China trek offers a truly unique experience. Not only is it a chance to visit one of the world's most impressive historical sites but also, as a result of our local contacts, it offers a rare opportunity to trek and camp in a remote part of rural China and to experience local life in its most unspoilt state. In order to maximise the opportunities for interaction and learning about the local history and culture, a team of local translators support all our treks in China.
The Great Wall attracts over a million visitors each year, however, the vast majority of tourists visit just a small section of the wall near Beijing. We have planned a route that will take us beyond the regular tourist trail and onto sections of the wall that have been seen by only a handful of westerners over the last hundred years. The sport of abseiling is one of the most exhilarating and exciting challenges you can face. Nothing beats the thrill of standing on top of a high building knowing that you are about to step backwards off the edge…… Not only will you get a huge buzz from the thrill of your descent, and the achievement of completing your challenge – you will also know that you have helped save lives through your fundraising. “I was scared silly at the top but thrilled on the way down - thanks for giving me this once in a lifetime opportunity” Janis (25), who recently completed her very first abseil Symonds Yat Rock is a scenic viewpoint towering 120 meters above the river which has cut a deep gorge in the limestone. Below Yat Rock are the Symonds Yat Rapids on the River Wye. You will be abseiling approxiamately 100ft down the cliff face. On the 15th May 2010, hundreds of heroes will take to the stunning hills of the Scottish Borders to show their support for Armed Forces veterans and rugby players, whose lives have been drastically changed through injury or hardship. The Poppy Scotland Hearts & Heroes Challenge takes you along 29 beautiful miles of the Southern Upland Way, from St Mary’s Loch to the famous Greenyards at Melrose Rugby Club. It's a challenge alright, but an event open to anyone whatever pace you want to go at. Hearts & Heroes is a joint venture between leading veterans’ charity Poppy Scotland and Hearts & Balls, Scotland’s top rugby charity. It brings together the country’s rugby and military communities to create a wonderfully unique atmosphere thanks to the mix of camaraderie, banter and hijinks that is legendary in Scotland’s rugby clubs and army barracks. You don’t need to have a connection to either a rugby club or military unit though. However hundreds of people just want to get involved for the personal challenge, a great day out in stunning countryside to support these two very worthy causes. In addition to the full 29 miles there are also shorter 21 and 12 mile routes, so there really is something for all abilities. Find the challenge that’s right for you, get together a team of 4 and register online today. The Hearts & Heroes website is packed with helpful tips and advice to help get you ready for the Challenge ahead. You can even set up your own fundraising website. This is the 3rd successful year of the Namibia 24 hour Ultra Marathon, which is rapidly becoming known as the ultimate endurance test for distance runners. Our route will take you into the northern Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world and the largest and most remote National Park in Africa. If the landscape does not help to keep mind and soul occupied, the ostrich and springbuck you will pass along the way should bring your thoughts into focus.
For 2009 our route increased in distance slightly to 126km – that’s three full marathons! You will race 126km in 24 hours across the vast expanse of desert, through the endless space of gravel plains framed by distant ridges and mountains, past dramatic upheavals of granite inselbergs and all under the clearest of blue skies during the day and a full moon during the night. 0630-08.00 Buses for the full marathon depart from the finish line in Queen Elizabeth Country Park to the start at Slindon College. 0900 First marathon wave starts (marathon runners predicting over 4hrs 30mins) 0930 Second wave - Relay Starts 1000 Third wave marathon starts (marathon runners predicting under 4hrs 30mins and all runners who might make the prize list. 11.00 Start of the 5km Fun Run in Queen Elizabeth Park.
There will be NO cut off time but marshals will be stood down on a 5hr 30 schedule from the 1000 start wave (6.30 marathon pace from the 9.00 start). Runners outside of this time schedule will be able to complete the route and collect the finisher’s medal but do so at their own risk. A mountain bike rider will follow the last runner taking down signage so the course will remain signed until the last runner is complete. Elevation gain is 5728ft and loss -5523ft. Medals to all finishers in the Marathon and Relay Salomon Technical T-shirt for all finishers in the full marathon (relay runners will be able to purchase a t-shirt). 7 Drink Stations SiS Gels and SiS Go available at drink stations at half way and 20 miles. In just a few short years the South Downs Marathon and marathon relay have become classics on the Trail Running calander - which is not surprising when you look at the fly through video of the route.
We moved the start to Slindon College on the edge of the Downs two years ago and it was a 100% better place to start the race so we will be using the College again for the start in 2010 with the rest of the route remaining the same.
For 2010 we will be starting with a three wave system starting 30mins apart with the first wave consisting of marathon runners who predict a finishing time of over 4.30, then the relay, then the marathon runners predicting times of under 4.30. The two marathon waves will be based on times given but so that we have a meaningful race the prize winners for the full marathon will only come from the third wave - if you think you may be a prize winner in the open category or as a Master then you must start in the last wave and ask to be changed if you are allocated the first wave.
Because of very limited parking at the start all marathon runners have the bus from the finish line car park to the start included in the entry fee.

Brand New for 2010 A fantastic new challenge for 2010 is a 100km off-road circular bike ride around the Isle of Wight. And there’s something for everyone as there is also a choice of 75km or 50km if you are starting out. This unique event provides a very tough but memorable challenge, and is set to become a classic of which you can be the first to be involved. 100km: Cycle around the whole of the island, visiting each of the corners, while staying off-road virtually all of the way, using the best natural, hilly, technical trails the island has to offer. 75km: This option still covers the island, but just misses off the far western leg. A great route that will leave you ready to tackle the 100km next year… 50km: This route is perfect for riders wanting an introduction to the island, including many of the best trails, but without going to each of the far corners of the island.

The first ever charity ride from London to Paris off-road
The challenge is over 250km of cycling off-road over 3 days from London to Paris.
Day 1: Over 100kms of riding as you head south from the capital, travelling along (mostly) well surfaced, flat, easy, off-road trails until the last leg where you climb on to the South Downs. With fine views of the coast you know its downhill from here, literally. A fast descent brings you in to Brighton and the end of the first day’s riding.
Day 2: We catch the ferry from Newhaven, providing 4hrs to rest as we cross the sea, arriving in Dieppe, where we continue the ride. We will ride 40kms that afternoon, heading south-east, on the Avenue Verte, to the town of Forges les Eaux, where we will spend the night.
Day 3: An early start is required as we head south, using a wide mixture of trails, providing the hardest riding of the route so far, taking us the last 120km to finish in Versailles, Paris.
The majority of the route uses off-road (but not very technical/challenging) terrain.
A hardtail (front suspension only MTB) or cyclocross style bicycle would be the perfect choice for optimum efficiency.
Anything else I need to know? • This is not a race • Teams of 4-6 – entire team can ride all distance or as a relay • All teams must have a support vehicle • We advise you to register as soon as possible as limited team places available, to avoid disappointment! • Registration includes Ferry crossing and end of ride Dinner • Accommodation not included • Minimum age 18 • We strongly recommend all riders to wear cycle helmets • All riders given a free BHF t-shirt but new to 2010 the option to purchase a BHF bike specific cycle top on the website. Please keep checking website. • Please do train for this event as it will be fairly tough
Do I have to raise sponsorship? We ask all riders to raise a minimum of £250 in sponsorship please. However to help the BHF save lives we urge you to raise as much sponsorship money as possible. The BHF is the nation’s heart charity, dedicated to saving lives through pioneering research, patient care, campaigning for change and by providing vital equipment and information. We rely on donations of time and money to continue our life-saving work. Contact: East Region Events Team (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm) 0808 100 2109 eastevents@bhf.org.uk

126KM - 3 MARATHONS - IN 24 HOURS This fantastic new race will be run in 24 hours across the vast, wild and remote area of the Grand Canyon North Rim.
The North Rim remains untamed and isolated – an uplifted, forested plateau surrounded by desert. Although only 10 miles (as the crow flies) from the busy tourist area of the South Rim, the North Rim is more than 200 miles away by road. Just one road crosses the top of the plateau and ends abruptly at the edge of the canyon. Very few visitors attempt to visit the North Rim, so you and your fellow runners can expect to encounter a remoteness now rarely experienced in daily life.
You will be self reliant – carrying your food, water and survival equipment. Water stations will be set at regular intervals, and medical staff will be positioned along the route for support if necessary, but otherwise it’s you against the other contestants and the elements.
We will also hold a 42km marathon which will be run at the same time as the 126km ultra. All competitors will start together, but the marathon runners will finish at the 42km rest station. For more detail contact jenn@acrosthedivide.com or goto www.acrossthedivide.com

We will be climbing Mount Kibo peak in this challenge. Contact: Lyndsey Whitehouse Phone:01246 541108 Email: events@arc.org.uk

A whole day is available to visit this ancient site, one of the new seven wonders of the world, which was re-discovered in 1812 by the Anglo-Swiss explorer John Lewis Burckhardt. From Petra we cycle to the Arava valley and spend a night under the stars in a Bedouin tent. The final days cycling takes us from Roberts Rock to Aqaba where we finish the challenge - for more detail contact events@alzheimers.org.uk

This cycling challenge begins with a beautiful acclimatisation cycle from the impressive ruins of Ollantaytambo along the length of the Sacred Valley of the Incas to the artisan market of Pisac. From here you will cut through the Andes, with spectacular views of the cordillera Ausangate, dropping down into the charming village of Paucartambo before a final tough climb to Tres Cruces, the last pass before the Andes begins its descent into the Amazon rainforest For more information contact: Kirsty Low Phone: 0208 498 7374 email events@barnardos.org.uk

From Cusco you will head towards the remote and rarely visited Lares Valley, a unique alternative to the extremely busy Inca Trail. Far off the beaten track, you will see diverse and spectacular scenery and glimpse a way of Peruvian life that has remained untouched for centuries. Your goal is to reach the ruins at Machu Picchu, the ‘lost City of the Incas’. These breathtaking pre Columbian ruins are nestled high in the Andes between two peaks. The ruins were rediscovered in 1911 by Yale archaeologist Hiram Bingham and are one of the most beautiful and enigmatic ancient sites in the world. You will have the option to extend your trip and head for some thrill seeking white water rafting. For more information contact: Kirsty Low Phone: 0208 498 7374 email events@barnardos.org.uk

Your trek starts in the rainforests of Lemosho Glades and heads upwards as you acclimatise on Shira Plateau. From here you will catch a glimpse of your goal Kibo, Kilimanjaro's main ice-capped peak.
